Service Agencies FAQ's

How can my organization access food donations?

Fill out the agency form here on our website and one of our team members will be in touch with you!

What types of food donations do you redirect?

We redirect safe, surplus, and high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste. This includes fresh produce, baked goods, packaged dry goods such as rice, pasta, and canned items, as well as dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese. We also accept prepared foods from restaurants and caterers if they are properly stored and handled, along with frozen foods and proteins including meat, poultry, and fish. We do not accept food that is unsafe to eat, such as items past their expiry date, opened packages, or food that has not been stored at safe temperatures.

How do you make sure the food being donated is safe?

We follow strict food safety guidelines to make sure all donations are safe for redistribution. Donors are required to store food at the proper temperatures before pickup, and our volunteers transport it quickly to partner agencies using safe handling practices.

*Is there liability associated with donating food?

There is a common misconception that food donors can be held liable if someone becomes sick from donated food. In fact, legislation such as the Charitable Donation of Food Act (Alberta) and the Food Donations Act (Manitoba) protects donors from liability when food is donated in good faith. This means that businesses and individuals face no legal liability when donating safe, surplus food.

What food can you take?

We follow a simple quality standard: if you would eat it, we will rescue it. For a detailed list of foods that can and cannot be donated, please contact us at info@zerofoodwaste.ca.

Can we get a tax receipt for donating?

We can issue tax receipts for food donations, please contact us at info@zerofoodwaste.ca for more information. We can also provide tax receipts for monetary donations.
